Taliban rejects to overturn measures against women

Jan 15, 2023

Kabul [Afghanistan], January 15: Responding to UN Security Council concerns about the restriction of women's rights in Afghanistan, the Taliban government said on Saturday that it could not allow acts that violate the Islamic Sharia law.
"The Islamic Emirate tries to regulate all matters in the light of Islamic Sharia," Taliban chief spokesman ZabihullahMujahid said in a statement. "Considering the responsibility it has towards the people and religion, the Islamic Emirate cannot allow acts against Sharia in the country."
The Taliban spokesman asked countries and international organizations to understand the religious demands in Afghanistan's traditional society and not tie humanitarian aid to politics.
On Friday, 11 countries urged the Taliban "to immediately reverse all oppressive measures against women and girls" in Afghanistan, from political and economic restrictions to those affecting education and public spaces.
Following the Taliban's return to power in August 2021, the hardliners imposed severe restrictions on women's right to education, work and movement.
Currently, women and girls in the country cannot attend school beyond grade six or get a university education.
